THE QUESTIONS

After reading my previous articles about divorce, certain readers asked me, “If we should be so rigid about those who divorce and remarry, what about Christian mercy? If in Christ we become a new creature, why do we still attribute to the divorcees the sins that have been washed by the blood of Jesus? ” Others say, “If we forgive a murderer, why should we not forgive a divorcee?”

 PREVENTION IS NOT JUDGING

I want say from the beginning that we should forgive everybody and to accept all repented sinners because we should not judge anybody before the time (1 Co 4:3-4). However, if someone has killed with a gun, I do not find discriminatory a law that forbids the permission to use a gun or to lead the police department to an ex murderer. There should be different ways to rehabilitate an ex-murder without putting a gun in his hand or without making him the director of a police department.

 A WRONG CONCEPT OF FORGIVENESS

Certain people have a wrong concept of forgiveness. The fact that we forgive someone for his mistakes does not mean that afterward we put him in a situation to fail again in the same mistake and to hurt many other innocent people. I present here some other examples:

In the case that someone has stolen some money in a bank robbery, if after he repents, it is a god thing, but it does not mean that we should make of him the director of a bank.

In the case that someone has serious problem with speed driving and he has been in jail because of it, if after he repents, it is a good thing, but it does not mean that we should allow him to become the driver of the school bus for our children.

In the case that a pedophile has raped some little children, if after he repents, it is good thing, but it does not mean that we should accept that he works again in a kindergarten.

If someone divorced and remarried, and after he repents and apologizes, it is a step forward to the right direction and it not always easy for us to know what the next step would be for him, but it does not mean that we should make of him a leader of the church. Even though a divorced preacher does not commit other mistakes, still it would be more difficult for him to counsel other couples because he can hardly be an example. It would be difficult for him to inspire young people to engage to a marriage for life.

It is evident that each one of us is different from the others, and each one of us is weaker in a certain ways or in particular temptations. It is out of question that some believers are more tempted to repeat certain mistakes that others are not, and we should be very cautious. As Jesus said, “Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves” (Mt 10:16).
