How to develop a 21st Century mindset

By Ozias Mucheriwa

“Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothinghadhappened.” If you get a sudden outburst of the truth do not be ashamed to say “I was wrong.”

Someone said that the greatest skill of the 21st Century is the skill of learning new skills. How do we learn new skills? By keeping our minds open for new ideas, being ready to admit where we err and move on.

Why is it that most times we find it difficult to change?

Human nature has it that it always yearns for approval regardless. Even if we do something radically wrong we still look forward to be approved. A study was conducted some years ago to find out if murderers in jail cells feel any sense of remorse. The results were shocking; Instead of being sorry for their actions, most of them actually felt justified in doing what they did. Some claimed that they were defending themselves and in the process killed. They had all sorts of reasons as to why they did what they did and even felt betrayed by the justice system.

When corrupt officials are apprehended and brought to book, rarely do we come across any who publicly apologize and seek for forgiveness, most of them become vindictive and spiteful.

In order to disentangle yourself from any limitation and guarantee yourself success in the 21st Century you need to have the ability to learn new ideas, face the truth about yourself and accept it unconditionally. It is said that diagnosis precedes prescription.

Accept a valid idea even if it comes from the least expected source. Most people only want to play expert all the time and would only listen to what they want to hear. Unfortunately the shape of the playing field is changing rapidly leaving no space for such limited thinking. New inventions have always come from the least expected sources, for example, in Harvard dorm room Facebook was born.

In so far as we want to be right all the time, our nature is such that we are liable to make mistakes. The sooner we realize this the more urgent we will see the need to admit, change and move on. Winston Churchill couldn’t say it any better, “Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothinghadhappened.” If you get a sudden outburst of the truth do not be ashamed to say “I was wrong.” Unfortunately many leaders view it as a sign of weakness but it is actually a sign of assertiveness. We all learn through our experiences and are liable to change. If you are not susceptible to change it means that you are not learning anything new.

As far back as the early 1900s, William James was insightful enough to articulate this profound observation, “We have to live today by what truth we can get today and be ready tomorrow to call it falsehood.” Rigidity and narrow thinking has condemned many people into a life of stagnation going nowhere. I know of a man who held so tenaciously to his old believes that when it became apparent that he had held on to falsehood with dogged tenacity he decided to remain bound for fear of coming out to say that he was wrong.

Most of what you hold as truths today will change with the continual unfolding of time and you need to be ready for such a change.
