Untapped Potential

Sometime back I visited a friend and noticed he had quite an interesting table. The table was made of wood but it had a glass top. The interesting bit about the table that made it stand out was this; between the wood and the glass top were small cubicles. Inside this square cubicles were all manner of seeds. One cubicle had maize seeds; another had beans, peas and son on. The clear glass then rested on top of these cubicles so that you could see the seeds underneath. The table looked so good right there in the centre of the living room. As I was thinking about that I thought to myself what wasted potential. As long as the seeds stayed there, they would not grow and multiply. The potential was there but the environment was wrong. Yes they looked good and the table was quite a masterpiece but the truth of the matter is, that is wasted potential.

Matthew 13:31-32 (NLT)

Here is another illustration Jesus used: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches.”

The table was a good representation of many of us today. We have so much potential but we are comfortable to be confined in some place where people will look at us and comment on how cute we look.

The bible says that the mustard seed is the smallest of seeds but when planted in a field it becomes the largest of garden plants. The environment that the seed is planted in is of utmost importance. The question is not the potential, which is already there. The seed comes with full potential logged inside it and the right environments will release that potential. You can have 2 mustard seeds and one is planted in the field while the other is places in a case looking all good and healthy but in a few years the difference will be so great. The same applies to you and I.

Where are you planted? Are you in a glass casing where people come and comment on how good you look while you have not yet even began tapping into your potential, or are you planted in a field where you are growing daily and being stretched to reach your potential?

Many of us are afraid of being planted in a field because that will stretch us. In reality when we are planted in a field, it means we will have to die to self and allow God to bring out the life that is buried deep within the seed that is us. Now that’s a lot of hard work and it comes with pain and brokenness. Many of us are not ready to deal with that! Instead we would rather remain polished and hide behind a glass casing.

Are you in the right kind of environment? One that will release the potential that is buried deep within you? If not, begin today to ask the Lord to break you out of the glass casing and plant you in a field where the gifting and strengths that God has planted within you can come out to the surface allowing you to have an impact in this generation.

Psalm 92:12-14 (NLT)

But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house, they flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green.

God has a plan for you and it is a plan for you to flourish and prosper that is why He placed all that potential within you.

Practical Application

Are you growing? If not ask God to plant you in the right field so that you can reach your full potential.

Life is too short to be a spectator. Wake up and do something!
