I have received recently a document written by a very well known scholar and other church printings from America that are not at all useful for the missionary work, but are instead creating many problems for us abroad. The first reason is because abroad, very often, all articles or documents printed by the church in America are looked as they were the Bible itself, which is not the case. These documents, even when well written, are still a human interpretation. Certain American editors are printing articles they should not, but evidently they are just doing their business. The second reason is that certain articles are written to respond to the American situation. Distributing that material indiscriminately in the mission field, some brothers are doing a mistake in good faith, but they are still hurting the work abroad.

 A classical example about this serious problem is the wrong approach about those who are divorced and remarried, more particularly the divorced and remarried preachers or missionaries, about whom I intend to speak particularly in this article.   

 Some wrote that for too long we have ignored those who are divorced and now we should accept them to make an act of justice in the church. If that principle is true, well, we have ignored also the homosexuals and the pedophiles, even the converted former Muslim terrorists, but I do not see any Gospel reason to put them in charge of a congregation.   

 Anyway, we are not the only ones who have ignored those divorced and remarried people because in the Gospel it is as if they did not exist. In the church of the New Testament, the divorced and remarried members are not mentioned and evidently they did not have a lot of space in the brotherhood. Who has the right to say that now they should have?   

What do we mean when we say that we accept the divorced and remarried believers? We mean that every repented sinner can be part of the fellowship.  However, we should not feel guilty for not putting in front of the congregation certain members who have not been an example with their life!

STORY1~1A recent Barna survey shows that a majority of America’s churchgoers cannot define what spiritual maturity means. That’s a pretty astounding statistic considering the amount of churches and resources available to Christians in our country. At no time in history have so many people had so much access to books, classes, ministries and education geared toward growing their faith. Yet, most believers cannot articulate what a spiritually mature Christian looks like.

For many of you, that might not be surprising. A lot of Christian men and leaders have been complaining for years about the church’s lack of maturity.

But one of the more interesting stats from the study shows that the problem may be staring at us from the mirror. Nearly 90 percent of pastors said that a lack of spiritual maturity is the most significant, or one of the largest, problems facing the nation; yet a minority of pastors believe that spiritual immaturity is a problemin their church.

What a great «man excuse»:

«Sure—it’s a huge problem; just not for me and my friends.»

Now, to be fair, spiritual maturity is one of those things that is hard to define in a sound bite. It’s a multifaceted thing that you can more easily see in someone’s life than spell out in a sentence.

However, the most troubling stat from the study, for me, was that church leaders could not support the topic biblically. When asked to identify the most important portions of the Bible that define spiritual maturity, 75 percent of pastors gave generic answers, such as «the whole Bible» (33 percent), «the Gospels» (17 percent) or «the New Testament» (15 percent). Just 20 percent cited specific verses in their answer.

How are believers supposed to mature spiritually when our own leaders can’t offer biblical explanations for what that looks like?

The section of Scripture that stands out to me when thinking about spiritual maturity is Galatians 5:22-23: «But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.» God says to us that these qualities are evidence that someone is walking with Him. These are the signs of a Christian, and the more you see them in someone’s life, the more mature, or the more like Christ, that person is.

The beautiful thing about the fruit of the Spirit is that it’s not just a set of rules. In the survey, 81 percent of self-identified Christians said that «trying hard to follow the rules described in the Bible» is a good definition of spiritual health.

I don’t know about you, but most of the spiritually mature men and women I have known and looked up to in my life haven’t been «trying hard» to follow the rules, they just have such a close walk with God that they can’t help but display God’s character. That’s what separates our faith from other religions. We’re not trying desperately to obey the rules lest we get struck down. We have the Spirit, and He gives us a desire to do the things of God. The more you walk with Him; the more He changes you.

That’s what I think about spiritual maturity. How do you define it? What are you striving for in your walk with God, and what kind of believers do you look up to?

ANSWER TO MIKHAIL IVANOV    

A question from Brother Mikhail: Dear brother Silvio, explain me why Paul wrote, “And those who get drunk, get drunk at night” (1 Th 5:7). Does it mean that we believers should be sober only during the daylight and that we can have a glass of wine more at the sunset before of going to sleep? What about the elderly people who do not disturb anybody but at home they just drink a glass more of wine to forget their broken dreams or to have a relief from their griefs?”

In 1 Th 5:7 Paul was just using a metaphoric language making a comparison between those who belong to the daylight, the children of the light who are sober, and those who belong to the night, the children of the darkness who are drunk.

The life of the elderly people should not be so hopeless and full of wine, especially if they have always served the Lord and still have a purpose in the life. Because of their long experience they still should have many things to give and they could be very useful to the young people. If the old age could present for us certain painful drawbacks, at the same time we should realize that death is a liberation from the many contradictions of this world (2 Co 4:12-18. 5:1-10).

In order to avoid certain useless misunderstandings, before answering to that question, I would like to read attentively what it meant for Paul to be sober, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober (Greek — sofronein) judgement, in accordance with the measure of the faith God has given you” (Ro 12:3).

Consequently, in the New Testament, the term “sober” has a larger meaning than the one of the limited Puritan teetotal vocabulary. In fact, sober could mean sober (not drunk), moderate, modest, careful and temperate in the judgement or someone who does not exceed in eating and drinking as Jesus taught (Lk 21:34).

WHO IS MY BROTHER?

 

Paul wrote to the brothers in Corinth,

the worst congregation mentioned in the New Testament,

“Therefore, my dear brothers…” (1 Co 15:58).

 

We are living in a very confused period, when many old values are deeply analyzed, scrutinized and questioned, where even some believers are no more certain in what they should believe or refuse. Consequently, it is not strange that someone is wondering who should be considered his brothers and who should not. This is pertinent question, isn’t? Maybe the right answer could put upside down our way of thinking.  

 

Before explaining who my brother is, a very important question, let see who our neighbour is because the two go often together. After, it would easier to answer also to that question.

 

Something about this question is presented by Jesus in the Parable of the Good Samaritan, where a man who was robbed and beaten by some criminals, was left half dead at the border of the road. A Jewish priest saw him, but he did not stop to help him and also a Levite did not stop, “But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. Look after him, he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have” (Lk 10:33-35).   

 

It is interesting that the Jewish priest and the Levite, who usually were strict observers of the Law, did nothing to help the man who was dying near the road, while the Samaritan, a foreigner, someone with whom he had apparently nothing in common, stopped to help him.

 

With this Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus explained clearly who our neighbour should be, but unfortunately, certain believers love only those who are like them, who think in the same way and take the same position in different issues, but they hate, or do not love, all those who are different from them, who have different opinions, different customs and remain indifferent to their ordeals.
